Hey everyone......just about done with fixing up my 14 turbo.....and am on to some finishing touches now. My gel coat needs some restoring. They are yellow hulls, and have some spots and stains on them,....but the gel coat isn't decomposing yet. No white dust if you rub your hand over it. It's a little dull. Is it possible to wet sand the hulls? Should I just use compound instead? I already tried cleaner wax....and it didn't help.

On another note,...how do you paint the aluminum castings? I'm looking to freshen up the rudder castings, and also the mast, and tramp frame. Any special type of paint and procedure to use? Thanks all!!

I've had good luck with 3M restoring compound, especially when used with an orbital buffer. I would try this stuff before going the wet sand route. You can top if off with a liquid marine wax to really make the boat shine.

Most folks don't paint faded aluminum castings. The problem is that painting generally requires periodic maintenance/touching up, as the paint wears off. A faded casting looks better than a flaking one.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to have to stop in to west marine and see what they have. Did a little compounding today with some light maquier's stuff....not the abrasive compounds. She is coming back to life for sure! She is coming along very well now. Should be able to get her in the water by the end of the month, work permitting! I'll post pics then!

If you really wanted to go the whole hog, you could take the boat apart and have the castings re-anodized. I've looked into it and it doesn't seem like it would be too expensive... Certainly would look new!
