Post subject:  Two part mast

Hi

I need to be able to carry my 14T Hobie Cat on top of our car - when it is on its trailer behind our motorhome for transporting to Spain. There is no problem in dealing with the hulls but the one-piece mast is a problem. I may be able to lash it to the side of the motorhome but it would be better if it was in two pieces for fitting on the car roof rack alongside the hulls

If anybody has any tips of how to make it a two piece mast without significantly compromising the performance of the mast I would welcom them

Thanks

Some of the newer masts where two part, but the two parts where not designed to separate. In fact you are supposed to glue them together. The 14 mast is like 22 feet long. You could fabricate an aluminum insert for half of the mast and then weld it to the other half, of course you need an aluminium tig welder and some welding chops.

I would go with the motorhome roof.

Like Hobiesrock said, you'd be better off lashing it to the motorhome. Trying to convert your mast to a two piece set up would be pain and you'd end up with a structural compromise and more than likely it would leak at the seam if/when you capsize, making the boat very difficult to right.

Thanks everybody for your replies. As you may have seen from my other posts, performance is not my main criterium and I have had dinghies with sealed two part masts. However the two part solution seems to be in the two difficult/time consuming box so will go with the idea of strapping it to the camper via an awning rail
