My new to me old hobie 14 main sail is torn in many places. Trying to decide on witch new sail to purchase. Is a heavier dacron cloth not just more durable but also faster in a race?

If you want to race... the Hobie Class Legal sails are 6 oz. Only Hobie Cat builds class legal sails.

To amend Matt's reply to be perfectly clear...only Hobie sails are allowed in Hobie sanctioned races. If you want to race in a race open to Hobies and other cats or multis...anything that will fly as long as you are measured and rated appropriately.

To actually answer your question, lighter cloth will be faster in most wind strengths. It also will wear out faster or lose it's designed shape faster.

If money is no object and you want to be "the fastest 14 ever"...get a mylar kevlar or carbon reinforced sail for your boat. It's a bit of a waste of money; but heck, that's what boats are, right?
