Post subject: | Mast base and step replacement |
I would like to replace the mast step and base to get more rake. As mentioned in the rules, H14 section 3.6, with the ball type. Is the replacement utilizing the H17 base and post or is there a specific list of applicable parts for this modification on the H14. I will most likely just get new base and step that are easyest and support more mast rake. And yes I will be racing. Thanks for any advice, Mike Hensel Edited 8/30, to make more sense |

I believe it's the same system that used on the Wave. The 17 has a much larger mast extrusion. |

I think he is also asking about the dolphin striker assy which could probably use the H17 post but would likely require modifying the holes in the crossbar, the bend of the striker rod, and probably the length of the compression sleeve. Probably more trouble converting the system than it's worth. sm |

The Wave doesn't have a dolphin striker, but uses a ball (on the crossbeam) and socket (on the mast base) type mast step. Here's what the crossbeam casting looks like: This is the mast base: |

I an checking to see if there is an option to choose from other than just replacing the mast step with one that supports more rake. I think buying a new 14/16 mast step is easier and probably what I will do unless there is another solution to consider |

Grind off the stops on your existing mast base and use a rotator arm to limit mast rotation. sm |

Does that help with mast rake? I can see how it would improve rotation, but I'm trying to get more rake. I want to get closer to block to block on the main sheet. And I need more mast rake with out the mast step hitting the mast base when it turns. |

So to confirm does can the wave mast base and step be retro fitted to the H14 as could be interested in this myself. |

Not designed for that. I'm not sure what the class expects to be used for this. It would primarily have been a European change since they still build H14s. THIS IS THE RULE TEXT: 3.3 Minimum filing or cutting to the mast step casting is permitted for the purpose of improving rotation. Stops may be added to replace the standard mast stops. The mast step casting stops may be removed provided a mast rotation control kit is being used under provision of Rule # 3.5 of these rules. 3.4 The mast base casting rotation stops may be altered, but the casting rotation stops shall not be removed, and the mast shall remain free to rotate from side to side. The mast shall not have controls to permit adjustments while racing, except as outlined in Rule # 3.5 of these rules and Rule #16.1 of the General Rules. 3.5 A mast rotation control kit as supplied by HOBIE CAT CO may be mounted. The mast rotation control purchase shall not be greater than 2:1 and the mast rotation kit shall not have controls to permit adjustments while on trapeze. 3.6 Provided a mast rotation control kit is mounted and used under the provisions of rule 3.5, the mast base and mast step may be replaced with the ball type system supplied by HOBIE CAT CO. |
