I found a 1985 redline boat. Special serial numbers indicate it was one of the Hobie Alter signature models that year. Fixing her up is going to be fun!! Thanks to all who helped finding me a good one, especially Jason Sanchez who found it!

Didn't even know what a redline was until I saw this post. Just looked and my $200.00 14 turbo with gen 1 epo's and a trailer IS a redline. No wonder it seems so light. Good luck with yours Bob |

Thanks! I love putting these project boats back together again. You really get to know the boat. With all the little projects completed, the list is now very small. Waiting on 2 shipments of parts then order a new sail. Hopefully be able to splash it before the end of the month.

Bob, Is yours a turbo or just single sail? I have sailed mine twice so far but haven't un-furled the jib yet. I figured I better figure out how to run one sail before I throw a second set of sheets to tangle my self in! What did you have to do to yours to get it back in shape? |

One sail for me in Original configuration. I first take it completely apart, shim pylons, square up the boat, sand and fair the hulls, etc. I don't like to use epoxy to stiffen unless it is the last resort. Order parts as needed. This one's lower rudder castings were shot so found a pair of good ones. I also found a pair of the old bent upwards tiller arms which I prefer when sailing downwind with a rudder up. Sourced a good set of EPO1s. Yes, I'm picky about the right components and I take my time. For me, the effort is rewarded on the race course. One thing, don't jam your rudders over in a tack and let lots (2') of mainsheet out too!!

Thanks for the reply. I will keep that in mind next time I get it out and try to tack. I WAS putting the rudders over hard. I feel lucky to have even gone forward considering I have only sailed twice! Second time out it was gusty and I learned to be ready to dump some main sheet quickly. That is, AFTER I capsized I learned to do that. When you say shim the pylons, what do you mean by that? |

I use thin brass strips with a hook made on the top to fit over the top of the stantion coming out of the hull. Beat corner castings on with a rubber mallet. Hobie used to make a kit for this a long time ago. Found the brass strips at Ace Hardware. They have to be thin and I used 2 per stantion.

So Those shims are just to tighten up the fit between the casting and the stanchion? Mine don't seem loose but maybe I don't know what to look for. What is best to seal around the joint where the stanchion comes out of the hull? Mine has silicone that is crumbling away. I was thinking of using urethane as it seems stronger than silicone. I think this is where the water got in on mine. |

Check the hull/frame stiffness by picking up one bow and seeing how far it rises before the opposite bow starts to lift. A tight boat, both bows should more or less move in unison. sm |
