Interested in what there might be for a cheap speed indicator. I am interested in the boat speed mostly but if it told wind speed too that would be cool.

I don't have much to spend so, while a speed puck would be the berries I don't see one in my future for many moons!

TIA

How about a cheap waterproof case for your phone (the vinyl pouch kind) and a GPS app?

I was just about to start a similar thread but I want speed and wind speed too. Right now i use my fish finder but no wind speed.

What are people using? Is the speed puck worth the price?

A Velocitek Speed Puck is worth the price - if you're racing or trying to set speed records on your foiling Moth.

For an old Hobie 14? Not so much.

There are a bunch of different wind meters out there, but you'll need to stop to do a wind reading. Cheap ones are <$20 on Amazon, but they aren't waterproof (most aren't). You don't see IPX6 or 7 waterproof ratings until they're over $100.

If you want continuous wind / speed readings, you're talking $$$$. A set up that's on my club's RC signal boat (B&G Vulcan 9 display with direction, velocity and GPS) cost north of $10,000. But the waterfall display is awesome.

Found this for a water resistant to 6 ft. anemometer. Pretty cheap. Not as sophisticated as the speedpuck but something.

From the owner's manual, "The SKYWATCH® Xplorer range has been designed to withstand short-term immersion in water at a depth of up to one metre."

That's not waterproof, that's splash resistant. You wouldn't want to take that on the boat with you unless it was protected (in a Zip-Lok bag, for example. Additionally, the impeller is very fragile and susceptible to contamination (hair, dirt, etc.).

I have had several cell phones get wet and die because they were stored inside Aquapacs. The cases all seem to develop leaks eventually. I'm sure they're OK if the cell phone is sitting on the console of a power boat and only being occasionally splashed, but for activities where the phone gets repeatedly doused in water, I would not recommend them.

Right now I would be happy with something that gave me boat speed and updated once or twice a second. I guess that is a gps something. Anyone used a gps watch?
