I weigh 230# so a bit porky for my 14 turbo. Whenever I get a really good gust the leeward hull gets pushed to within 1-2" of the surface. Having pitch-poled once already I am looking to see how well the bow planes work?

The lake I sail is 300+ acres so not super small but there are a lot of wakeboard boats on the lake. There are frequently 1-2 foot wakes I end up plowing through and invariably that's when I catch a good gust!

It kinda stinks to have to sheet out every time I get a good gust of wind!

Wow, No one has an opinion on these? I would of thought someone might have used them.

There have been a few threads on these - if you search you'll find them. I am trying to remember the general opinion and I don't think it was decisive, but perhaps more on the side of them not be very useful. I have no experience with them and have a Wave not a 14. Probably people will tell you to just upgrade to a 16 :)

Yeah I am sitting on the rear corner of the tramp, and am sheeted in but, when the bow is sizzling along 1 " above the water and there are a bunch of stupid wakeboat wakes coming up I don't see it being pretty! lol

I have been running in the 3rd hole from the bottom on the shroud adjusters would tightening it up a hole make a difference?

I really need to get a trap harness maybe then I could get further back

Seriously though, being on the verge of a pitchpole is part of what sailing a Hobie 14 is all about. The boats are so weight sensitive you can pretty much capsize in any direction if you aren’t careful (and sometimes even if you are). That being said, I’m 205Lbs and I’ve stuck the bows in on a 14 several times where I thought for sure I was a goner and I just released the sheet, moved back, and it popped back up. I would skip the bow planes.

I agree living on the edge is part of the fun. I have capsized and pitchpoled and lived to tell about it. Guess I just need to hold on next time and see what happens!

Haven't had any wind to sail the last few days so having withdrawals right now!

As a follow up. I went out today in 5-10 gusting up to 18. Was interesting there were a few times I was going good and a gust from a different direction brought me to almost a complete stop. Once a gust completely deflated my jib.
Today some of the gusts that hit were strong enough that the lee hull got driven almost a foot under. I just slipped the main a bit and it popped right back up. Only once today did I ALMOST pitch pole. Both bows dove, I slipped the main a bit but I felt the stern just starting to lift so I dumped a bit more sheet and up they came and away I sailed.

I guess it's more a matter of experience than anything else. I felt way more comfortable tonight than in the past.

Had a fun night.
