Hi,
I can’t find the answer to these questions searching the forum for two days now, so maybe someone can help me! Y’all have been great to help in the past!

Do the gudgeons screw into threaded metal inserts embedded in the Hobie Cat 14 hull? What about the drain housings? I was thinking of removing them all to sand and gelcoat it. Just didn’t want any issues putting them back on. Any ideas about issues I may run into doing this? Should I just tape them?

Also, I see a couple of colors (at least) on the hulls. How do I know I’ve sanded down enough to re-gelcoat?

Thanks so much!
Chuck

There is a 1/4" inch thick plate of aluminum molded into the hull.

Thank you so much Matt! That makes me feel a much better about taking those off if I should have to!

Should I take the gudgeons and drain housings off to sand and gelcoat or just tape over them?

I would attempt to take them off......with caution.

Typically there is galvanic/dissimilar metal corrosion where the SS gudgeon screws go through Al backing plate. This can make them very hard to remove, and, if forced too much or corrosion is really bad, they'll strip and/or shear. Lots of posts here on remedying that, but they all include a lot of pain/work. Bottom line.....if they don't unscrew fairly easily, I'd leave them in. If you are successful in removing them, put some goo (Lanocote, TefGel, anti-seize) on those threads to help prevent future problems.

Fairly certain the drain housing screws do not go into the plate.....they see very small loads. I've never had any trouble removing those on the H16, and expect the H14 is the same. Seal them good, but don't overtighten so you don't strip the hull material or warp the mating surface.

Thanks so much Jerome for the great info!! I’ll give them a test and see how they feel. Hopefully not stuck too much!

Make sure you use a scewdriver with a tip that fits the screw head very well and a handle with a good grip. It only takes a couple times of the screwdriver jumping out of the screw and you’re done.

Great advice! I hadn’t really thought of that! I’ll make sure it is a tight fit and use care when trying to remove them.
Thanks so much!
