Post subject:  Hull Repair

I have an '84 H14 Turbo with very worn hulls (on the bottom at least). The outer (woven cloth) layer of fiberglass is worn through for about a 6 foot length of each hull. The inner mat glass is about half worn through. Essentially, the 'keel' has been worn flat on both hulls. I was planning on repainting the hulls this winter and I might as well repair this wear. Any suggestions on how I should go about reinforcing the bottoms of my hulls (and possibly building in a wearing surface of sorts)?

At this point I'm planning on sanding the surface well, applying a strip (or two or several) of glass fabric across the worn area (for strength), adding several narrower strips of glass on top of the worn area (to build up the shape and be sacrificial material), sanding, fairing, and finally repainting. Let me know if this sounds reasonable. Thanks.

You can get keel templates here:

I had one worn spot. I just laid up a bunch of plies to build it up, and then shaped it. I think your approach is sound. The bottoms are the wear surface - so you will have to do the job again in another 36 years or so.

Good to know I'm at least on the right track. Thanks for the link to the template. I'll put together a little MDF jig and get the hulls built back up.
