I just recently added a jib to my H14, using new Murray's equiptement. When I tried to raise the mast the other day, the forestay/ pigtail/bridle/furler combination was far to long; I was getting mast rake numbers in the high 50s and low 60s with everything pinned as tight as I could get it. The mast looked like it was about to pop out if the raising pin wasn't in, and everything seemed ridiculously loose. I understand that the I should be able to turn the shrouds 90 degrees, and I can still adjust them, so that is not a concern, but the rake seemed downright dangerous- I think the mast would pop out with very little effort. Is there a solution? It would be great if someone take some pics of their entire forestay/ bridles setup and email them to [email protected]

Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon,

I have had that problem twice. Both times I had to get the connector above the jib shortened. I was able to make some adjustment around the area of the furler, which had an adjustment "stay" through the middle that could be removed to shorten the forestay. Lots of rake is good, and I do sail with a lot of rake, but in my case I needed to still remove about 20 centimeters.

How did you get it shortened/ who did you go to?

Thanks,
Jon

If I'm not mistaken, the 14 Turbo uses shorter bridle wires than the standard 14. If you replaced the forestay but not the bridles, then you would have way too much mast rake.

Sorry for the double post, but we just called a hobie expert and he thinks that we have a pair of 16 bridles, which would explain the problems. Thanks for all you help.

Hi Jon,

I had the right bridle, both times, as far as I know. No idea why it was too long. It could not have been a H16 bridle, cause it connected directly to the bottom of the furler, with special fittings, and the H16 does not furl the jib. I just got it shortened. But any sail maker can do it. Or rigging specialist, maybe even a handy sail gear shop. I must admit, both times I was using the same bridle, but it was one I was supplied with my original turbo conversion. Didn't quite last 25 years, I had to get it repaired this last year, but I guess it was still the same dimensions. Some SOB stole my mast and cut through all the rigging, which is why I needed to set it up again. Sadly my boat is off the beach for the winter here, so I can't send you a picture.

Geoff.
