I know this is an old post, but I'm looking for the best places to put in on North Padre Island and best places to sail. Does anyone sail on the gulf side or does everyone stick to the bay? I've been to the beaches here and it seems pretty shallow with lots of sand bars that would make it difficult to get outside the surf. The offshore wind is perfect and you can drive right up to the water (if it wasn't for the shallow sandbars for two hundred yards offshore). Also, any recommendations on hotels? Every hotel I've stayed at didn't have good boat parking. I really want to make it work since it's the closest ocean sailing to me.

Thanks!

If you are set on launching on the beach on Padre Island, I’d go for Access Road 3A and launch just south of Packery channel, if not I’d launch off Mustang island at JP luby. The sandbars aren’t actually too bad, and once you’re past the second one if it’s a calm enough day you’ll be clear, it’s not that intimidating. If you want a boat ramp then Packery Channel has a boat ramp in it not even a mile from the gulf. As for hotels you should look for one close to the Windward parking lot, a public lot on Access Road 3A. And if boat ramps and gulf launching won’t work, then there’s plenty of random spots off the side of the road to launch into the bay or Laguna Madre.

Thanks for the info. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn on Windward and walked over to the parking lot. I wonder if it would be okay to park in the public parking lot over night and walk across the street to the hotel. The parties used to get crazy at the Holiday Inn but I think it's under construction now.
