Okay so my wife and I are playing with the idea of sailing a Hobie 16 or 18 from New Bern area to Hatteras Island. We would probably take Adams Creek to Cape Lookout and then island hop our way up to Hatteras Island where our friends will be waiting for us. We plan on camping on each island along the way.

I want to know if this idea sounds possible to anyone or if anyone has done this trip before in a small vessel?

Hey there, a friend and I are trying to plan something similar this year in the same area. Perhaps we can collaborate.
Adams creek has a couple low bridges and would require you to paddle several miles and lower the mast - there's a watertribe race that uses that route, and you can read about their adventures on the creek.

Do you plan to stay on the sound side or, go out the inlet at Morehead? From my experience, there are not many places to beach and camp on Core Sound.

Please let me know what you find out - we're working out logistics for our trip right now.

There is a group that runs a "Cats to the Cape" race every year. It's a fun, informal race. They sail over to the cape, cook some food on the beach, and then sail back. I know some that went last year and they had a blast. I don't have a lot of details, but you may want to check out their webpage and/or join their facebook group for updates.
