If you’re like me I’m sure many of you are starting to get boat brain with warm weather around the corner. I wanted to reach out on here and invite all of you east coast North Carolinians to come check out the sailing club at Lake Waccamaw. We have a number of hobies and other catamaran owners at the club and we are always looking to grow our membership and get more people on the water or on the start line during our monthly races.

Lake Waccamaw is a large, shallow, oval-shaped lake in southeastern NC in between Whiteville and Wilmington just off of HWY 74. It is the largest of the natural Carolina bay lakes, believed to have formed during the recession of the ancient seas in the area. Its proximity to the coast means that it is not uncommon to benefit from the summer’s afternoon sea breezes. Until discovering Lake Waccamaw, I had never experienced such stellar conditions on a fresh water body.

The club itself boasts a large covered pavilion, beach launching, mast-up storage, changing rooms, restrooms, warm showers, a kitchen, a long pier, and two concrete boat ramps. We are a fun, casual group and we would love for you to come check out our facilities and consider membership.

If you are interested in more information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to send me a private message.

Bump

Well, it has definitely warmed up and it sure is cooler on the water than it is in my backyard. If you are a Central or Eastern North Carolina sailor and have not heard of Lake Waccamaw, you are missing out on one of NC's best sailing venues and Waccamaw Sailing Club is likely one of the least expensive sailing clubs you will find. The monthly cost of membership is likely less that you are paying for your internet service. You get a LOT of bang for your buck here. A few of the inciting features that you would have full access to as a member are:

-mast up storage with no active overhead power lines on the club site
-grassy rigging areas
-sandy shorelines
-full kitchen (stove, oven, refrigerator, sink, stocked with plates, silverware, cookware, etc)
-large pavilion area with men and women's dressing rooms (two private showers in each with hot water)
-two outdoor enclosed showers with hot water
-a long pier
-two private boat ramps
-monthly club racing
-annual "social" events such as shrimp boils, oyster roasts, and clean up/cook out
-a fun and friendly atmosphere with sailors of all ages
-a separate back lot for additional boat storage
-ability to purchase stock in the club
-inexpensive mooring for mono hulls
-24 hour access, including camping
-electric access for RV's
-a growing number of catamarans joining!!!

It's also a great place to camp. My wife and I frequently camp there and we have been treated to some spectacular moon rises, meteor showers, and peaceful nights.

These are only a few of the wonderful and inciting features of this lake and the sailing club. A few other benefits to the sailor are that this lake only has one public boat launch access and there is no boat fuel anywhere on the lake. This keeps motorized boat traffic down significantly. The lake is also in close enough proximity to the coast to regularly get the sea breeze in the afternoon. It's oval shape also gives you a lot of room to settle in on your course, and keeps the winds from being too shifty.

If you see this post and think you'd be interested in checking it out or would just like more details, please send me a pm. We would love for you to come visit. Until then, please check out our website here:
