Repair/replace h-18 transom

I am finally getting around to fixing my H-18 transom. Wind pushed my parked hobie into a fence and the rudder broke out a chunk (most) of the transom. I cleaned and cut, and have only about 1" or less of a lip right left and bottom.

I put in an access port, and I have my fiberglass materials ready to go.

My question is: Should I try and emulate what was there before, with fiberglass/thin foam/fiberglass? or should I just build it completley with fiberglass? It's not that much foam in that layer, maybe less than 1/4 inch.


I realize with solid glass there will be a slight weight factor. I am also wondering if it will be stronger, or perhaps, without the foam, more brittle and weaker? Maybe the glass/foam/glass gives it more flexibility?

My plan was to put in a thin piece of foam, like builder's blue-board, to match the core, and fiberglass on both sides, inner and outer.

I am not racing this boat, just having fun, but I would like to have my repair stay in place.

Just be aware that polyester resin attacks (dissolves) styrene foam.

Not a problem if you're using epoxy.

Divinycell foam is what's used in the original construction.
