I acquired a second Hobie recently - a 14 in sound condition except that about three previous owners had each had a go with a tin of house paint on the hulls. Sanded it back now to the original orange gelcoat, obviously the gelcoat is gel-like no more and in one or two places I have sanded down to glass.

My question is: having seen on this forum that a two-part epoxy paint and loadsa elbow grease with various grades of sandpaper is recommended, can anyone comment on the need for a primer/undercoat?

Thanks. BTW, we are new Hobie sailors and our learned to sail our 16 in the Cook Strait, more time spent upside-down than anything else! There are a dozen or so 16's here in the capital of NZ.

Here's a great link on boat painting. Hopefully it'll answer your questions!

Thank you , Jim. Good article. It suggests epoxy filler, then two coats epoxy primer, then a carefully-mixed polyurethane using roll-and-tip method. I'm going to go this way. Anyone else tried it?
