I'm refurbishing an old H16 Comp-Tip mast.
The base needs to be replaced. I've driven out the old rivets, but the base is still solidly planted in the mast extrusion.
What is the recommended method of getting this old base out of the mast?

Take a mallet and a stout screw driver to the base casting. You can place the screw driver against the casting within the luff track opening. Tap it out from there. May take some stiff blows as the base can either be corroded in or glued in with sealant. |

Matt, I smacked it several times way harder than I wanted to. It moved maybe 1/32". I guess I'll find a heat gun and try heating up the area about 1 to 2 inches above the base. Or wait, how about a hot towel? Don't really want to screw up the anodize, although it's not perfect anyway. |

Smack it back and forth on the same principle of breaking a tin can in half. Use a bigger hammer. You are replacing the base anyway aren't you? To heat it you may consider heating the base not the mast extrusion. If it is a glue that should sufficiantly soften it to blast away again. Later, Dan |

Thanks to all, A nights sleep and the steaming hot towel did the trick. Mast was in a cool warehouse, laid the towel over the end for about a minute and as Matt desribed, drove down with a screwdriver through the track slot. Was able to get enough gap to insert the blade of a big flat screwdriver between the mast end and base "ledge" and twist all around the perimeter, then go back to the slot hammer again and repeat. Fine, rock-solid, factory workmanship from 1980! The mast sealant was right down on the base, the mast base inserted before that had hardened and that was the culprit, not corosion. Dan, I was "stealing" this good base from an old bent mast to replace a bad one on the newly aquired Comp-Tip version, so I didn't want to break it. |
