I'm making a few fiberglass repairs on my H16 and I'm unsure whether or not I should put the extra time and money into Gel Coating over the repairs.

If I don't care about how it looks, can I use fiberglass / polyester resin for the repair and as the outermost layer? (I would add the surface curing agent to the final resin coat)

I am only concerned about the structure of the repair and it's ability to keep out water.

Please let me know if I'm making a mistake, thanks!

Gel coat is nothing more than polyester resin with added pigment. It provides a needed UV barrier to the underlying layers.

You could just add pigment to your final layers of glass to do the same thing. Won't look as pretty, but it'll be functional.
