Post subject: | Replacing a Mast Base Plate |
I have an older 18' Hobie that I recently purchased and I've been fixing it up. The base plate in the mast is broken and I've been trying to get it out in order to replace with a new one. However, I think a previous owner may have used some sort of glue (maybe epoxy) when they put the base plate into the mast. Does anyone have an idea on how I may be able to remove the old plate? Is there any chemical that I could soak the end of the mast in that might dissolve the epoxy glue that they might have used? Thanks. |

You should be able to hammer it out, even if it is bonded in with a sealant. Use a big blade screw driver to wedge into the base and hammer it out. May have to work around the base as it comes out. |

I have mucho experience removing epoxied comptips from masts. You wont get away without some level of destruction if epoxy is involved. The last time I had to deal with epoxy in a mast fitting, it involved a chain, a 1/2" line a big tree and my 6000lbs SUV. |

you might try using a heat gun to losen the epoxy...or even propane torch....obviously dont hold the flame too long a any one place.... |
