Post subject:  Replacing an integrated traveler in the rear cross bar
I have a 1994 H16 with a sticky rear traveler. The bearings are shot and it needs replacing. (makes a horrible scraping noise!)

My H16 has the main traveler integrated into the rear crossbar. I can't see any easy way to remove it. Is there an easy way?

Please tell me I don't have to remove the whole crossbar to fix it.

There should be an access plate riveted on to the starboard corner of the crossbar, right next to the casting.

Then again, 1994 was the very first year of the integrated track and they may not have had that feature right away. You can retrofit one if you're handy and not afraid of cutting away part of the track with a Dremel tool.

Hmmm. No Access Plate here.

I guess I need cut out an access. Anyone got instructions/pictures/advice on how to do this right?

The plate is available from Hobie Cat ($8.10 in the latest catalog). Not sure if it comes with the rivets or not, but you can use pan-head sheet metal screws instead (makes it easy to remove in the future).

You'll need to carve away the forward top part of the track, back to the sidewall (Dremel tool with a high-speed cutting bit). It's not that difficult if you take your time and don't try to cut off too much at once.

Matt Miller will be able to tell you if the plate comes with instructions and rivets.

Ok, I've got the parts now but I'm a little unsure how to grind down the flang on the rear cross bar. Has anyone done this? What tool/attachment did you use. I have a dremel tool but this looks like more than a dremel can do and it would probably make a sloppy cut. Do I need an angle grinder or something like that?

Since the 1994 H16 is the ONLY year that does not include a traveler access plate in the integrated cross bar, I finally took the plunge today and ground down the crossbar to removed my old traveler.

For those of you with a 1994 H16, it is also the ONLY year that uses the old style #105 (small bearing) traveler with an integrated track. The Hobie catalog has this labeled incorrectly. I ordered a #111 traveler labeled "NEW STYLE ('94 and Newer) in the catalog. When I opened it the package the instructions said "Fits '95 and newer boats with deep integrated track". Sure enough it does not fit my boat. :roll:

Hobie, you really made this difficult for those of us with 1994 boats.

95's started building in 1994, so there is a transition point that is unclear.
