Post subject:  Bottom job ?
I have decided polyester resin is what I will use, but what weight cloth should I use and how many layers should I put on? also what type of thickener is used with polyester? I know coloidial silica is used with epoxy, is this ok for polyester? if not what is? both pontoons have about 1 inch wide by about 8 feet long wear spots. somebody had done quick job and only put 1 layer of glass on and it wasn't very well bonded. I want to do a good job not a quick job

I would use 6 to 8 oz fiberglass tape. Probably 1" wide. Each layer will be roughly 0.010" thick, so the number of layers required will depend on how worn the hulls are. Colodial silica will work for thickening, but you really shouldn't need to thicken the resin when you're laminating glass. After you've laminated the glass, go back and fill in the weave and fair the hull using Formula 27. To get a good bond, make sure you sand and clean the hull with acetone real well and make sure you remove all of the previous repair.

What is Formula 27? Is that a type of resin, or a brand name?

Formula 27 is a thickened polyester resin. Kind of a marine version of Bondo.

It's light gray, so easy to cover with white gel coat.

Thanks, Matt. Would Formula 27 be a good product to use to laminate glass with when I give my 14 a bottom job, or should I use a thinner polyester resin? Bondo is a polyester based product, how about using that? Or do you guys have any other favorite products?

No way. Formula 27 is a filler. It's used to fill in scratches and imperfections. It is way too thick to flow into the glass. You need to use a laminating resin for the glass lay-up portion of the bottom job. Once you've got the glass laminated on the hull, use sand paper to fair in the edges only. Then use the Formula 27 to fill in the glass weave and any other imperfections. Then sand down the whole repair and gelcoat it.

To fill any little scratches left after doing the sanding of the Bondo/27/thickenedwhatever, use "glazing putty"-comes in squeeze tube sizes too. Fills small sanding scratches better than anything else since that's what it's designed for, and sands easily with 400 wetordry. If spraying gelcoat, thin with styrene to proper viscosity for the particular spray gun. I like spraying gelcoat without wax, and spray on PVA to cover gelcoat for full cure. By the time you clean the spray gun, it's probably about time to spray on the PVA. It washes off easily, and allows better buffing out than wax.
