hiking strap ripped off

Hi,

on our HC 16 the hiking straps ripped off on one end yesterday. Looks like the thread was too weak after about 10 years in the water and sun.

Can we fix this by ourselves? Which thread/yarn is recommended and what are the best tools to do it?

You can fix it yourself. Assuming you don't own an industrial sewing machine, you will likely have to do it by hand. I've done repairs to tramps using a hand needle and it's worked fine, just takes a little while. I can't tell you what size the needle was, but I don't think it was anything special. I've gotten nylon sail thread from seattlefabrics.com and sailmakerssupply.com. I believe it was called V60 or something like that. Anyway, if you do it by hand, the important thing is to try to go back through the original holes in the tramp, otherwise it will be more difficult to punch through. Having a pair of pliers on hand is helpful to pull the needle through. If you try to push the needle, you can end up breaking it.

Or take it to a sail maker / upholstery shop. Its a pretty inexpensive repair.

Maybe not the best way, but I reattached my hiking strap with a grommet kit. I simply drilled the correct size hole through the strap and (vinyl) tramp and then hammered it back together place on my driveway. It's held up fine for two seasons.
