Post subject:  Gelcoat and Preval Sprayer

I picked up some Preval 267 Sprayers and finishing Gelcoat. Am I going to need to thin the Gelcoat or will the Preval sprayers handle it without thinning?
What is the most affordable thinner to use, if that is necessary?

You need to thin it. I used to use acetone. Thin to a milky consistency. Spray light / thin coats and wait a bit between each (10 seconds?)... been a long time though!

Thin with styrene.

Second the styrene. Especially white gel. Thin until sprays evenly, use a test surface. Apply thin coats as Matt says, wait a couple of minutes between coats. Last coat should have "sanding aid" added to allow for proper anerobic curing and ease of sanding out of "orange peel" hardened surface.

+2 on Styrene - Put down a couple more coats than you think you need. Prevail sprayers with thinned gelcoat take several (many?) coats to build up a decent layer of gel on the boat. It's much easier to do a little extra sanding than have to respray after you've sanded through a too-thin layer of Gelcoat.
