Gday guys and girls having just recently attained a 1974 hobie 16 i have just now noticed that the forward stbd pillar that goes from the deck into the hull is loose , moving up and down about 4 inches. before i cut into the hull i would like to know could anyone help me with more information on repairing this problem. i first thought if i drill a hloe through the pillar close to the deck and then put a pin through the fiberglass over the pin this would work but htinking on the force needed to hold this i soon relised that maybe not. but i am not sure how they are originally held in place, does anyone have photo's or suggestions? thanks in advance. chris |

4 inches? That's a lot of motion. I'm not sure if that can be fixed. The front pylon (that's the proper term), is part of the deck layup, then when the hull/deck are joined, it rests in a "shoe" that bears against the hull. Here's a cross-section of the assembled hull/deck: In your case, it sounds like not only has the shoe become unbonded from the hull, the pylon has become unbonded from the deck. This is a major repair, and not really cost effective on a 40+ year old boat. |

I would recommend you download the Sept/Oct 2009 Hobie Hotline magazine. That issue included an article that specifically discussed the repair procedure for fixing a broken pylon shoe. sm |

Thanks sm I am going to repair this, it did not cost me much. Could you give me a link to issue to download, very much appreciated. Great photo. It looks like a few beers an a bit of bog(fibre with resin) should be able to fix it if I cut a hole in the inside, then up a bit of wood with more bog where the hole is then put the hole pice backover. Should work. Cheers Chris |
