Post subject:  Holder 12 rudder assembly question

Hi I'm new to the forum.

I just bought a used Holder 12 to have for nephews to learn to sail. This has the kick-up rudder feature.
(lifting the tiller handle allows the blade to kick up. Holding the tiller down, keeps it from kicking up)

When sailing it for the first time I intentionally was out in super windy, gusty conditions just to see how comfortable it was in difficult wind. On a couple occasions the rudder kicked up as in the process of hiking in and out. I think it was because I lifted the tiller a bit, but was frustrated because after it kicked up, I lost control of the boat, etc.

I'm wondering if there is supposed to be a shock cord or spring inside the cam-over mechanism that provides a little more resistance/intentionality in getting the tiller to kick up?

Other than photos of the outside of the rudder, anyone have any diagrams of the inside of the rudder mechanism and all the pieces that should be there?

Thanks so much!

Yes, there is supposed to be a bungee cord or spring holding the tiller arm down.

Thank you.

Any photos/diagrams or attachment point details?

I don't have a good drawing, but there is typically a bracket on the underside of the tiller arm just above the pintles and a hole in the side cheek at about the lower pintle. A 1/4" bungee connected / stretched between will hold the tiller down. Loose enough to raise the arm. Quick snap up and down with the tiller moves the rudder up or down.
