In reference to the delamination fix by drilling holes and injecting resin to relaminate the layers: I recently fixed the deck of my hull via this method using epoxy resin. Now I want to do the same thing on the side of the hull using more common polyester resin. I have heard that polyester resins can eat through some foams. Is it safe to use it to relaminate the outer fiberglass wall to the foam layer? or could this instead destroy the foam and make things worse? :(
This is for a 1979 H16
Thanks

Either resin. The polyester resins are the original materials the boat was built from and should not damage this foam. I do recommend Git Rot which is epoxy. It is somewhat flexable when hardened.

My 1980 H16 has a delamination on the top of the starboard hull just forward of the fwd tramp pylon. I've read the delam fix instructions, and figure even I should be able to do it. Just a couple of questions: What size should the breather holes be? 1/8", 3/16", larger? smaller? Also, before I drill, about how deep is the foam between the fiberglass layers? The delam area seems to be about 6"wide and about 14" long. Any idea how much resin will take to fill it?
Thanks for any help.

Hey, get west system epoxy and a filler or some equivilant, don't use polyester resin, its much more difficult to use, and may result in a poor job (I tried both in different areas). The key is to tape(masking tape) the areas around the holes so when epoxy comes out it dosen't get all over your boat, then you can tape over the holes (with more masking tape) so that the epoxy goes somewhere else (and you don't have plug the holes with your fingers). Less than a quart of epoxy plus filler will do it. Also, the size of the holes dosn't matter just make them all the same size and get it big enough to fit the syrenge in. On the deck you will feel when you hit the second layer of glass.
