Scupper Cart - Warning

Image

Improper use of a scupper cart can damage a hull. Kayak scuppers are strong and rigid at the hull bottom and cockpit floor surfaces. The tubes between are not intended to take lateral loads. These are water barriers primarily. Scupper carts are designed to insert through scuppers and extend clear into the cockpit area. This places lateral loads only on the hull bottom and cockpit floor areas. A partially inserted cart can place unintended loads on the scupper tubes. This can distort the tube or even cause failure.

Cart bushings must contact the scuppers. Use the cart bushings to prevent wheels from contacting the hull bottom and reduce any load to the bottom or keel by distributing the load directly to the scupper area.

Some larger cart wheels may contact the hull if the cart clamps are not moved higher on the posts. Heavier kayaks can then possibly cause the clamps to slip under load, so adding a sleeve below each clamp is suggested.

Installation -
Slide the clamp/bushings onto the cart posts and down closer to the crossbar pad. Newer carts include a spot weld to stop the bushings from sliding too far down. Place the kayak on the ground upside-down or on its side. Slide the cart into the scuppers. Adjust the bushing position against the bottom of the scuppers at a point that prevents the wheels from contacting the hull and tighten. The cart may contact at the keel and both scuppers on some models. Re-check that the cart posts fit clear through the hull as described above.

Pro Angler Specific Concerns
The pronounced keel and round outer bottoms of a Pro Angler is at additional risk of distortion or damage without the use of cart bushings. Heavier loads could cause clamps to slip, so re-check tire clearance often.

Use the "cart keeper pin" feature to retain the cart in the hull.

When removing a cart... once again, prevent any side loading of scupper tubes.

Scupper carts are best installed by rolling the kayak on it's side. This allows cart installation and removal without any loads on the tubes themselves.

Never leave a kayak on a plug-in cart. The weight of the kayak will cause damage to the hull bottom and/or cargo area around scuppers. Especially on heavier models our heavily loaded kayaks.
