Post subject:  How fast is the Getaway ??

This is my first post to the forum. I have read a lot of the other posts and it has really helped my decision - I just put a deposit on a new Getaway and will take posession in May - I can't wait !!! :D

A question, just what kind of maximum speed can I expect to get out of the Getaway. Is there a "table" of wind speed vs boat speed. I have searched for this but couldn't find any information.

Thanks

Post subject:  Speed?

We used to have a speed guage on the brochures. Getaway performance is similar to the 16. Upwind performance is a little less. Higher capacity speed is better. Top speed is likely in the low to mid 20 MPH range.

How much wind?

Cats do about 1 1/2 times the wind speed. At the upper end it will take more, but I would guess no more than upper teens to low twentys to do top speed.

Congrats on your purchase. No doubt you will be loving your boat for years to come. I also have a 16 but since I purchased a Getaway a few years ago, the 16 just sits in the backyard.

Post subject:  GPS Speed

Personal experiance:

The Getaway is just slightly slower than an H16 on all points of sail except downwind with a normal crew weight.

In 18mph wind, 25mph gusts on a choppy lake (2-3ft chop), 3 people on board, we averaged 18.4mph on a GPS with WASS support.

It is plenty fast for a thrill. It lacks the get-up and go, but it still very fun.

I can't break the 18.2 mph barrior. I've clocked 18.2mph top speed using GPS with two on board. I can achieve 17 to 17.5 easy with 1,2 or 3 on board. Once I had 5 people on board and hit 17.5 mph on a reach. It was a very wet ride, but a alot of fun.

hi, I'm sailing at 14-17 knots in 20-25 knots of wind. I find the leeward hull digs in and is slowed by the wing seat. I'm clearly doing something wrong. Due to tyhe speed apparant wind is about 60 degrees. Any suggestions, crew weight is about 160kg

If your looking for a speed comparison table, the closet thing you might find is this:

http://offshore.ussailing.org/Portsmout ... lasses.htm

The handicap ratting is used to compare different boats for mix class racing. I gather its created by accumulating and comparing results from lots of races.

Here are all of the Hobiecats on in the table.

Hobie Fox spi 60.4
Hobie Tiger ODR spi 62.1
Hobie 20 Miracle 65
Hobie 21 no spi 67
Hobie FXOne spi 1-up 68.5
Hobie SX-18 spi 71.3
Hobie 18 & 18 Magnum 71.4
Hobie 17 (1-up) 74
Hobie 17 Sport Slp 2-up 74.5
Hobie 16 76
Hobie 14 Turbo 1-up 83.1
Hobie Getaway 83.3
Hobie 14 86.4
Hobie Wave 92.1

Of course you will need to do some figuring to make since of them.

CT (Corrected Time) = ET (Elapsed Time) X 100 / HC (Handicap)
