What type/brand of epoxy is recommended between the comptip the aluminum mast base?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions of getting the old comptip out of the mast base?

Sadly, I snapped my mast at the joint when launching the Getaway this spring, ...long story at an over crowded boat ramp. Anyway, I bought a new comptip from Hobie and I need to replace it. I also bought a mast base because the base got chipped (1/4" maybe) when the mast broke but I'm not sure if that needs to be replaced. The mast ball on the cross beam is fine.

The comptip broke just above the mast bottom so now only the very bottom of the comptip is stuck in the aluminum base. Can it be drilled/cut out and then carefully sanded down to the aluminum or would it be easier to pull the comptip piece out somehow? If carefully cutting the comptip out isn't feasible for whatever reason, I have an idea of maybe inserting some type of heavy toggle bolt into the comptip and carefully using a Come Along to force it out. Having never replaced a comptip, I'm just guessing here what is the best/easiest solution.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks - Brian

Mine also broke right at the joint. I did exactly what you suggested. I used a large toggle bolt and tie downs to secure each end to a fixed object. Then I tensioned the tie-downs and applied heat to the mast around the broken insert. As it slowly pulled out I would ratchet the tie-down to keep the tension. I was able to find a youtube video of someone doing it the same way.

Thanks for the reply about how to remove the comptip. I'll give that a try.

Do you know what epoxy is recommended for setting the new comptip?

I think bondo is recommended, not epoxy. Fills gaps better. I know that there are a bunch of different bondo's, so that probably isn't much help.

I never ended up repairing mine, so I don't have any advice on the epoxy. The comptip was too expensive and it would eventually fail again. I picked up an old H16 mast which is one solid piece, stronger and lighter.
