| Post subject: | getaway vs. 21' sport cruiser |
i am interested in the pros and cons of a getaway vs. a 21' hobie sport cruiser. i will be sailing with young kids and am looking for a boat that is easy to trailer and set up quickly as well as low maintenance. i have heard the sc is a little faster and i liked the idea of extra storage. any advice is appreciated. thanks. |

i found a 2001 sport cruiser for $9500 with trailer and have seen several getaways w/o trailers and w/o wings for $3600 to $5300 depending upon age and condition. based upon some posts of other sport cruisers that have sold i'm thinking at $9500 it might be a bit high, but there also are not many available. |

I have no experience with the 21 but I can tell you it will me more work to set up and rig, I think either boat would suit your needs. You didn't tell us where you sail, that might make a difference. Personally I like not worrying about center boards or dagger boards. The getaway is easy to sail has no bad habits but is a little slow. That might be a plus with small kids on the boat. |

i sail in massachusetts - buzzards bay on cape cod. on the dagger boards ... wouldn't those only be an issue when beaching the boat or is there more to it? i'm curious as to why hobie stopped making the sport cruiser. was it too expensive for what it was? did it have issues when sailing? i also thought it was pretty cool that it has a tent for camping out on board - not sure how functional it is or how often i'd use it but cool nonetheless. |

i think there is a pretty big difference in weight, while neither is light, Getaway is 390 lbs, 21SC is 600 lbs. so depends if you are going to wheel it around beach to launch or trailer. 21 has a reduced sail area rig also, but should be fastest. i haven't sailed a 21 but should also be fun. Getaway is fun with kids, also fun solo.I think 21 has centerboards that are spring loaded like the 17 and are not much bother..doug |

thanks doug. appreciate the insight. i found a used 21' sport cruiser so i was hoping i could handle it myself (w/my three relatively young kids). the getaway may be the better option. thanks again. |

I have a 16 as shown in my picture. I handle it well by myself with my wife and kid on board. I dream everyday about the Getaway that I am going to buy. I hope that to be in the spring, but it might be another year away. I checked one out last year and It just seemed to be sooo user and kid friendly that I can't get it out of my head. The 21 sounds real cool but I know that where keep it/put it in, it would be to much and my crew is not always that much help. Good luck |
