I have a Getaway with a single trapese set up. When the dealer went over the rigging of the boat with me, he said to always rig the trap wires on the outside of the wings. Is this correct? As I've seen mention of rigging them on the inside.

Thanks :)

Most important here... Trapeze and Wings are an either / or option on the Getaway. Hobie Cat does not support the use of trapeze from the Getaway wing.

Hmm.. interesting. I wonder if all the dealers actually know this? So why is this a no-no? Something to do with overstressing? I guess it would be fine then to trap off the hull under the wing? I need to put the harness purchased to use at least once in awhile.

It has to do with the wires attachment in the CompTip area and the length of the mast / power of the rig. Trapezeing from the wire adds additional stress to the whole boat because you can push the boat harder. Just something the engineers didn't sign off on. Since the original introduction of the boat we went to a thicker wall on the mast, so maybe it could be re-considered at some point.

Matt
Please provide detailed advice for current owners with wings and a trap setup. Is using the trap from a wing unsafe? If unsafe, is or will there be a fix to make it safe?

Advise? I can only state what has been agreed to by the engineers... either / or but no trapezeing from the wing.

If Hobiecat dont reccomend trapping off the wings, howcome the Hobie website shows several pics of individuals doing just that??!

While youre there Matt, is it ok to run double trapeze, WITHOUT the wings, with a combined crew weiught of 120 kgs (264lbs)?

Cheers from Aus. :?:

I'll fix the image blunder. We take pictures as often as possible. Sometimes we do things in trial that are not ultimately accepted in practice. Certainly should not show pictures like that.

Double trapeze? As long as the combined weight does not exceed a large single trapeze crew. 264 lbs should be OK.

huh, This is very interesting to me. I know that when I tap out on my wing the wind has to really be ripping so I don't capsize to the leeward. What would the engineers say the max weight of traping off the wing would be if it was ok?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you probably won't get a new answer. I am going to guess it is not a limitation of the wings, rather the load the mast system can handle.

Matt:
You must be joking? For three years now there has been no such advice about one or either but not both. As a matter of fact, none of the dealers in Ontario Canada are aware of this even now.
No problem selling you both, but you cant use them together. No problem advertising them across the web like that either?
Take my advice and get the engineers to sign off on this. If early boat buyers need a mod then say so. Frankly I think that you, Matt, are having a hard time swallowing the Corporate Line on this one.

We have never stated that trapezeing from the seat is acceptable. The trapeze wires we sell for the Getaway are too long for use with the seat back rests. We don't recommend trapeze from the seats and we don't make the wires to make it work that way. Simple as that. The fact that others have gone ahead and done this does not mean that Hobie Cat will support its use that way.

Wow, I opened a can of worms. Well, I still like to hook up the trapeze wires even if I can't trapeze off them, because the handles come in handy to pull on while tightening the shrouds. So my original question still, are they supposed to go on the outside or the inside of the wing? I see most of the photos on the Hobie Cat site show them on the outside. This photo actually shows one on the outside, one on the inside!
