Post subject:  Slot

It is very typical for sails to pass down below the slot opening, so that is no a critical issue. Some wear is expected.

To get the downhaul tight you can try sheeting hard while adjusting downhaul. Downhaul, then sheet and downhaul while the sheet is tight.

There are multiple holes the mainsheet can be attached in the sail's clew. You mat be pulling the sail too tight aft and out of the slot. Perhaps try attaching to a hole further aft in the clew plate. Another idea is to tie a loop of line around the mast and through the downhaul grommet to hold the tack tighter to the mast and in the slot.

Matt.....i have been using the center hole on the clew to attach the main block,,,,what/when should i be using the other holes?? I am also thinking of attaching a block/cleat for the downhaul for fast adustments under sail...anyone do this??

Post subject:  Adjustments?

Adjustments?

Lower / forward hole for more outward (outhaul) pull on the sail foot. Placing in the aft hole would make the sail more full, forward hole makes it more flat.

The H16 now uses a 6:1 downhaul for easy on-the-fly adjustments of downhaul. This is a kit that would fit the Getaway... 6:1 Downhaul #2089 shown on page 27 of the catalog.

I liekth your ideas Matt. I will try sheeting in then pulling the downhaul tighter, that will also put the opening at a freash spot in the luff. Your other idea about tieing a line around the downhaul line is great as well, I will have to try it. That idea did how ever lead me to another question, what is the bungee on the mast for?

That would be a "tangle preventer". The idea is to keep the jib sheets from tangling around the base of the mast.

so in..say...15-20K of wind, sailing solo, where would u attach the block to the clew?

Post subject:  Forward

Forward for more "outhaul" and a flatter sail. Travel the main down the track a little too if the boat flys too much and you constantly have to sheet out. Further out on the traveler allows for a tighter mainsheet and therefore a flatter sail = faster. Even upwind.

so how is the tangle preventer supposed to be rigged?

the pad eye where the jib sheet ties off to, clip it there on each side, this will make a triangle thus keeping the jib sheets from wrapping around the base of the mast and tangling.

Post subject:  Thanks mark

Thanks for the suggestions Mark. I especially like the one of putting a line around the downhaul rope and lashin it to the mast thereby reducing the pull outward on the portion of the sail luff that is extending down into the open slot. I will do that and also take advantage of changing the location that my mainsheet is hooked into the clew. Thanks for the suggestions.
