Post subject:  water leak test for Getaway

I recently bought a 2001 Getaway and noticed some water in the hulls. I performed the recommended test by using a vacuum to push some air through one of the drain plugs. I noticed some bubble in the storage compartment near the twist and turn hatch that provides access to the inside of the hull.

Should the twist/turn hatch be water tight ? What can be done for a better seal ?

I dont think it is possible to have a watertight cooler. I had a brand new hull put on and the cooler filled up. Just make sure your drain in the cooler works and the line is clear and you will lose most of the water you take on.

Is the problem that the lid doesn't sit flat on the container, or is the o-ring seal not very good?

The lid sits flat on the container. It may be the o-ring seal is not optimal.

Well jpecan, there are two ways to solve your problem -
1. DIY- Do It Yourself
2. Send it in to get serviced.

However, if you are interested in DIY then try adding some silicon grease to the "O" ring on the hull plugs - and silicon the tops of the hull/tramp joint - and learn to live with the leak. Even after a day of hard sailing, you shouldn't accumulate more than 1/2 pint or so - I bash mine around quite a bit, have replaced most of the gell coat with woven roving (lots of beach landings), and kept the leak down to about 1 quart/day/hull at its worst.
