I was going to purchase the mast stepper iii for my 2003 Getaway, but when I looked at the on line instructions, the first item gave me pause. They call for bolts with tangs to be installed into pre drilled and threaded holes on the side plate where the seat brace is attached. However on my boat, there are only indentions, not pre drilled and threaded holes. Am I missing something here or would I need to do some kind of modification to attach these tangs? Thanks for any help.

That was my problem, it looks like a mess, but there isn't a better way that I can find. I'm thinking of building my own.

The part that attaches to the end casting is a simple attachment. You could pass a line through one hole and back out the other to create a loop... would do the same.

I bought my boat used and then purchased the mast stepper kit. Only one side the center cross bar had been drilled and tapped. The other side had only an indentation where the threaded hole should have been. I just drilled it out and tapped it myself. No problems with it after 3 seasons and I raise and lower the mast about 15-20 times per season. Works wonderfully with the trailer winch.

With that said, if you are nervous about drilling and tapping, and if you have wing seats, you could just attach the line from the mast stepper to the wing seat bracket. Really, you just need an anchor point on the side of the boat to stabilize the mast while in motion up or down from sideways movement.

Thanks for the help guys, going to go ahead with the purchase of the mast stepper III. Now that I understand what the side tangs are for, I will make the mod for the side supports as necessary.
