I would like to replace my Forestay and Shroud wires this season as I do not know how old the ones are that came with the boat. The boat is a 2004 Getaway. Last summer while sailing another 16's mast came down and we had to tow them in. Not a pleasant experience for either of us. I have several questions:

1. How often should you replace your wiring?

2. If I am replacing my Forestay do I need to replace the whole assembly? The cost on the Forestay assembly is $175. Seems like a lot of money.

3. Is there any 3 party vendor out there that is reliable?

I appreciate any and all responses.

Thanks. Dom Silla

Wires should be inspected carefully every season and inspected before each use as well. Always check for failed strands, secure clevis pins and rings and tight shackles. It is harder to check the wires at the tang if left upright, but those wires see the most stress as the mast rotates... especially if the mast is not restrained during storage.

How often to replace? Maybe 2-4 years would be reasonable / safe? Depends on use and storage conditions... mast up?... More often. Reality is; most people do not replace wires prophylactically, but the cost of injured crew, damaged hardware or lost time on holiday make it a wise investment.

Looking at 2012 sales history. The replacements are nearly perfect sets per boat... for every forestay sold... we sold 2x shrouds and bridles.

Hey Matt:
Do you have any insight on question #2? I have bought all the wires as my rig is about 4 years old, but how about the other parts (furler, turnbucke at top and shackles). Those will probably last much more right? (of course I plan on inspecting them thoroughly)

thanks!

Guillermo

I would inspect the furler closely, especially the yoke which joins the bridle wires.

However, there's no need to replace the entire furler assembly. If you have problems with your furler, you can buy individual replacement parts or a rebuild kit. Replacing the whole assembly would be a huge waste of money.

As for the mast tang shackle, unless it is clearly damaged, I see no reason to replace it. It should last the life of the boat.

One part that I did buy just in case was the mast tang itself.
It does wear out over time.
I have had a mast tang fail on a Hobie 16. NOT FUN!!

I just need to get the stainless steel rivets for it. Does anyone know the specs for them?
thanks

Guillermo

not sure, but think they are 3/16" and you can get
drill bits that are mede to drill SS.or grind off heads
with an angle grinder.
