Want a sailboat to use on a private lake in Mississippi. It's 180 acres and usually has good wind. My nieces and nephews are all taking lessons and would like a
boat they can use. They range in age from 8-16. Is a Getaway the right boat? Or is the lake too small for it?

The Getaway is too much for an 8 year olds to solo. I'm sure your intending on sailing with them. If not you need to be looking at something like an open bic, No Hobie would be great for kids that size to sail without an adult. They simple couldn't right them when they flip. The open bic is designed for that age group. If they are going to copilot the getaway with you the the getaway would be my recommendation for anyone one who wants to sail with a family.

You could sail in 180 acres just fine on a getaway. There isn't much difference in say a Getaway or a 16 as far as size or ability to tack. A hobie 14 normally don't come with a jib, so it's harder to tack.
