Post subject:  Water inside Right Hull

I have a 2005 Getaway that I have enjoyed for the past 8 years. During the past sailing seasons I've notices small amounts of water in the right hull when opening the plug. The left hull is more water tight. This season when using the Getaway on lake Michigan the amount of water has increased dramatically..... (gallons). What could be causing this? There are no apparent cracks of openings in the hull.

Check the keel line. Maybe punctured or worn through, but not a common issue.

Hatches may be leaking?

You can use a soapy water / air pressure test to locate a leak (FAQ): http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=169

Thanks I'll closely check the right keel this weekend. I have always noticed a puff of air from the left keel when opening the drain plug. How does the venting work and what could compromise it?

Vents vary, but I think they were drilling a breather in the inboard aft area where the crossbars slide in.

A vent would not let in more than a very small trickle.

Check drain plug O rings too.

Something I have done with aluminum boats is to fill the hull with water and watch for leaks. You should be able to do the same thing.

Water is heavy and could damage the hull if fully filled.

Soapy water works best:

I checked the hull and keel this past weekend. No apparent damage or holes. Is there any chance that where the crossbeams penetrate the hulls water could enter there. Not having originally assembled the getaway.... I'm not sure of the construction for these penetrations. In heavy winds and following waves the hull is nearly submerged at times. I did try pumping in some air with a bicycle pump and soaped seams and penetrations..... no bubbles.

This is a little obvious, but is the hatch inside the starboard cooler on tightly?
