I still remember my first capsize about 53 years ago. I was 8 and took responsibility for it in a Shinnecock Sloop (SS). We were at dock and tied up.

Ok, somehow we were able to capsize our Getaway while "heaving to", it was very embarrassing since we weren't even moving. The temp was in the mid 60s, wife was wearing a sweatshirt and raincoat to keep warm, winds were 20-25 kts and gusty. I tacked into the wind to stop, kept the jib in the backwards position and started working on the rudders (to keep them locked in opposing turn- turned towards the wind). While I was trying to lock the tiller down with a bungee, the boat started to turn away from the wind and the windward hull lifted up. I noticed that the mainsail was locked in trimmed-in position and I tried to uncleat it, but it was too late. We went over fast, wife was sitting on leeward hull and I was in middle (not good). We can laugh about it now, but it was not a good thing at the time. Anyone else have this happen? Just thought I would write a word of warning! Am I the only idiot that tips a boat while stopped? Ok, let the insults and jokes fly......... |

OH, no, you are the ONLY one who has done this.... Seriously, we all have done it. Some of us more than once. If someone has not YET done it, the YET is the crucial wording. I mean, we get relaxed and the wind shifts, or you come out from behind a point or something that's shadowing the wind, and over you go! I applaud your wife! My wife isn't laughing about it... |

I once tipped a dingy that wasn't even untied from the dock yet. Of course, I was 17 and I had dropped my beer overboard so.... |

Well I've flipped my 14 and 16 lots, but never my Getaway. You talking about 30 mph of wind, so I wouldn't feel too bad about being blown over. I'm not in the habit of cleating my main sheet much. I make it a point to uncleat my sheet , letting the main go completely through the tack, to avoid weather-vein and failed tack. I just throw my rudder in the water when tacking, then pick it up on the other side. I've I'm in a hurry I grab the cross bar make a few adjustments, then grab the stick when I get time. |

I would add...be particularly aware when you seat leeward: even in slow wind all it takes is a sudden puff especially when you sail solo and off you go(solo then poses huge righting problem) |
