Hulls Crushed by New England Snow!

So this is what happens when you store your boat outside through the worst winter on record in New England. The weight of the snow literally crushed the hulls on both sides over the rollers. I had the boat covered in tarps and with over 6 feet of snow on the ground, couldn't get close enough to clear the snow that piled up on top. The real bummer is that I have insurance, but "accumulated snow" is an exclusion. The repairs (replacement of both hulls, the back crossbar is bent and the comp tip came apart) are nearly as much as a new boat. So even though we've had the longest winter ever (at least seemingly) and the cold still hasn't let up, it looks like I won't be sailing this summer (and perhaps beyond). But I will tune into this site with envy as you all sail away .

What a mess!! maybe if you get the plastic nice and warm, then put a little air pressure in the hull they may come back out. At lease to the point where you can sail her again.... Or maybe you could find a set of used hulls. Sorry dude....hey maybe you got insurance...

Are you considering parting out the boat?

Being a New Englander myself, I struggled with how to cover the boat in the winter for the first few years. Tried using pool pillows to balloon the cover up but always worried about the weight of the snow on the tramps. Then built and A frame over the boat one winter. That was better but still a hassle and still had to clear snow.

When you get your new boat or new hulls, swap out the rollers for bunk boards. The boat is light enough that you don't need rollers to get it on and off the trailer. I swapped out a couple years ago when I noticed the hulls deforming a little just sitting on the trailer on the single rollers through the summer. The deformations are gone now so I think the plastic has some memory. Probably not that much memory to bounce back from the damage you're showing. Also, I have been taking the boat apart for the winter. Tried covering it with the tramps in place but it was more work than just taking the tramps off. Once the tramps are off, the hulls just slide off the cross bars. Better for the tramps to be relaxed for 6-8 months when not in use anyway. Our NE summers are too short and winters too long. Then I keep everything in my garage except the hulls which are laying on their sides on the trailer deck covered with a tarp and the mast which is hanging on hooks under the soffit on the back of my garage. No worries for the winter now.

It almost looks like if you could warm them up in a hot room and hang them upside-down using some sort of skeg-gripping clamp, that they might spring back/straighten out?

I would consider selling parts, but would prefer to sell the whole boat "as is." If anyone in New England is interested (I'm in Massachusetts), please let me know. Still in mourning...

If you decide to part it out, I'd be interested in your rudder system assuming it's the newer style ez-loc system. Mine is a 2002 with the older style rudders. Also time for new main trampoline and wing seat covers. What year is/was you boat?

I have an H16 in the Detroit area, and we also got a ton of snow. I stored it outside on the trailer with an aluminum row boat upside down on it, then covered tight with a tarp. The snow just slid off neatly. I was surprised how well it worked.
