How often to the mast balls fail? Could it be something I did? Broke dropping the mast, scared the cr&p out of me.

Boat made her 250 mile ride home yesterday, rigged it today. Raising that mast was a little scary. Took a little to figure out how to hold it up and get the forestay connected. Next is how to do it alone. Gonna replace rigging (2 bridles, 2 shrouds, and the lower forestay), new line for the furler, and of course the mast ball. Everything else looked pretty dang good.

None of your photos are visible. But I suspect you didn't rotate the mast sideways while lowering. Usually that breaks the bottom of the mast casting, but I can see that it could break the ball.

Since you mentioned stepping the mast solo: I use the main halyard for this. I tie an extension to the forward end of the halyard and tie that to the trailer mast stand. Next I raise the mast into position and pull down on the halyard, taking up the slack until it is tight and pulling from the mast stand. Then just cleat it off and go around front to secure the forestay. I have also used my spinnaker halyard for this. Good luck!

Best way yo step the mast on your own no doubt. https://youtu.be/733z8c7EUJ8 to attach the furler it works to put tension with a a rope from the forestay with the front cross bar. I have tested myself and works great. Remember to align yellow arrows before step lowering the mast. The other day by mistake I lowered turning the mast to the other way. Fortunately nothing happened.

Ended up getting a Mast Stepper III, haven't tried it yet.

When I mentioned we figured it out, I should have explained. I raise the mast and the wife has a strap wrapped around the front cross bar. I added a shackle to the drum. All she has to do is put the hook in the shackle, give it a couple of cranks to bring some tension, then slips in the quick pin. Takes us about 1 minute to raise the mast and secure the furler to the bridles. I thought about using the halyard connected to the winch for raising it single, however the cleat is pretty low on the mast. I don't think that would work every time.
