righting bag

Well, I've had the getaway for 4 weeks now, and new it would happen sooner than later. I finally turned it over! And it happened so quickly, I can hardly remember how it happened. It was 10-15 k winds, and I was on a broad run to port, sitting windward, and gybed to a starboard run, and made the mistake not to shift crew to windward, and it was over.
I was asking for input on the righting bag in the hobie catalog. I could not right the cat by myself, I had to get 2 people to flip it. I was thinking the bag may help in solo sails. Anyone had any experience?

we do sell a lot of bags thru the year, I have never used on personally, we also sell a hand full of righting poles. I've never had a complaint with either one from our customers.

I've flipped it a few times and have found with 2 people (each about 170) we can right it in any conditions (done in it 25 mph winds).

The trick is to be able to get up there to grab the line.

have you tried some practice rights?

I have used the Hobie brand and they leak like sieves at the stitching. By the time you are ready to pull, the bag is too light. The murrays bags are tighter. But I switched to a power righter and it is great. No bag to worry about and you do not know the pole is there untill you need it. The rigging of it is way simpler on a getaway than the generic instructions. Also when the boat comes over your still hanging on to the pole and there is now way it will flip all the way over to the other side.

When you installed your power righter, did you install it on the horizontal surface or the vertical surface of the main cross bar? Also, did you use the rivets or the screws to attach it? Would love to see some pictures if you have them.

I rivetted it to the vertical surface of the crossbar as recommended. If the rivets prove to be too weak I'll switch to screws. Both rivets and srews are supplied. It looks just like the web site photos but no need to run the righting line in a loop or install new eyestraps. only one line and a snap hook are needed to hook onto the existing O-ring that the getaway righting rope runs through. Simple.

Thanks John. I wasn't sure those rivets would hold with the force that is applied with that pole. I will get it installed this weekend.
