Post subject:  Getaway Rudders

The starboard rudder doesn't want to lock into it's full, down position. This has created some exciting moments where I'm messing with it, just after sailing off the beach, but not looking where I'm going. Having crew mess with it only disrupts steering. This also produces considerable weather helm, and the other day when I was screaming in double digits, the rudder kept swinging out, due to the drag, making handling even worse, when I needed it most. If it ever stops raining in Houston, I'm going to go out and compare it to the one that works fine. Any suggestions as to what to look for would be appreciated.

After comparing the two, I found that the cam had jammed in the non-springloaded position. I pried it out and it seems to work fine. I'll keep an eye on it. I noticed that the cam is a flexible material that had bent slightly outboard/inboard. I'll see if that causes any binding.

Make sure the rudder is all the way down and forward before you push the tiller arm down or you will roll the cam before it engages properly. Also be carefull when lifting the tiller to disengage the cam, if the tension is too tight the cam will not roll up again. It is possible with carefull adjustment of spring tension and slider adjustment to achive a point where they will disengage OK and still stay put at speed.
