Wave Vs. Getaway (Pros and Cons)

OK, there is a jib, spinnaker, and traveler kit avaliable through Hobie. There is a hooter kit avaliable from Rick White catsailor.com.

Traveler has been discussed in depth on this board. It allows more control over sail twist and improves performance. You only add once piece of hardware.

The jib kit adds a sail foward of the mast - think about the small Getaway sail that rolls up (the Wave jib will not roll up however). This adds more sail area and theoretically more power. I have not used this Wave jib before. You add an additional sail and some hardware pieces. jibs can be used on any point of sail.

Spinnaker kit adds another sail too. Spinnakers are only used sailing downwind. The spinnaker is hoisted on downwind legs and taken down while going upwind. The point is to add more sail area for downwind because the Wave is quite slow going dead downwind.

The hooter kit is not a hobie item and it is expensive (but I would love one). You add on a bowsprit and a huge sail foward of the mast (this will furl, or roll up when desired). This doubles the total sail area and should really really speed the boat up. HOwever this kit requires lots of custom installation of items and of course no Hobie warranty or support.

Essentially these are all performance increasing kits.
