Yes. You can do that.

Are you sure that is legal? Below are the 2017 rules...

Quote:
RUDDER BLADES AND RUDDER ASSEMBLIES
1.1 Rudder blades* and rudder assemblies** shall
be stock as supplied by the HOBIE CAT CO.
Only Hobie Cat Company supplied aftermarket
rudders* are allowed to replace stock rudders.
* Defined as Hobie Wave and Hobie 16 rudder
blades.
** Defined as the original Hobie Wave system
and the Hobie Wave EZ Loc system.
NOTE: As of the time of this writing (February
2010) only aftermarket rudders are available
that fit the old style rudder castings.

Yes I have read the class rules and it is a little vague. If you look at the Hobie parts catalog: "We developed the EPO3 rudder blade as the next generation performance rudder blade for the 14, 16, 17, 18 and 20." So nowhere does it say it is an aftermarket for the Wave.

Rudder blades* and rudder assemblies** shall
be stock as supplied by the HOBIE CAT CO.
Only Hobie Cat Company supplied aftermarket
rudders* are allowed to replace stock rudders.
* Defined as Hobie Wave and Hobie 16 rudder
blades.

So since the original H16 plastic blade is the same rudder as the Classic Wave I have to believe that the EPO's are an allowed after-market up-grade.

And to the question why would I spend the money? When you have the mast raked all the way back and you are loading the skeg-rudder system. Having a stiff efficient foil has got to perform tons better than the thin flimsy rudder on the E-Z lock. Now that said, when I take the Wave to the ocean and the boat is getting knocked backwards with 3' waves you can bet I'll have the E-Z lock system on.

As an editorial comment, I agree that we should be racing the boat in the box, but then there should be no upgrades.

I have EPO2s on my Wave and a set of EPO 1s on my other boat, since I have snapped a few but the boat seems to work pretty much just as well (according to the performance of some of the EZ Loc boats in bigger Wave races) with the lighter duty EZ Lock rudders. I can't explain it. The old rudder system on alot of the boats have been upgraded to EPOs though so you should go ahead with your plans. The verbage was omitted on accident I am sure. The intention of the the upgrade was to allow for a better rudder as long as it is supplied by the HCC, so you'll not hear anything from anyone about it.

Now that I know who you are (wfix), I forgot to ask about the EPO 3 mods you made and didn't notice if they were on your boat or not? How'd it work out?
