well...another way for my JADED mind to look at it...

If it keeps the 18/17/20 rudder castings in production, that's a good thing.

So Jeremy, you're milling the EZ lock "detent arc" in a set of EPO's?

I'm interested in EPO's for my 2008 Getaway :wink:

I have been sailing in the gulf off of FL and now will be beached on Lake Michigan north of Chicago for most of the summer. I've been really tug'n & push'n on the tiller! Me thinks the rudders are a flex'n. AND they're concaved on the starboard side!

Well, it works with the EZ lock. It's quite labor intensive. Milling the rudder is easy (but itchy). Getting it to look good takes about 4 hours of hard labor. That makes a $250 rudder into a like a $500 rudder. They could be molded with the notch waaaaay easier. I'm not sure if there is a market to support the mold. If Hobie had an old 16 mold that I could...ummm...borrow, I could modify it and build them. Still it would be a small production and probably end up costing around $350. And...they wouldn't be clear carbon I'll tell you that much. It recently took me about 2 weeks of solid working to just repair a set of French Carbon rudders and they're still not right. I clear Gelcoated them and nothing went right. I'm still not sure exactly what the stock coating is on those suckers. It caused my polyester clear gel to act very funny. I had to shock it with some cobalt to make it work. And that's after spraying them twice, and having to Acetone it off...twice.

I'd say... stock supplied rudders only.

That is simple. They always came with plastic blades regardless of the castings so the boats would be similar. Lets not get into some of the stuff Rick has been pushing... that just pushes some people away from racing.

A Single-Manufacturer One Design class should be a stock boat. And a stock boat boat should be a stock boat.

I still have a problem with the idea of non-stock sails being allowed. Rick points to the successes which stock sails have had against alternates, but I think that makes the point for not allowing them.

But then again, I'm not a serious racer; and I don't think anyone should be turned away who wants to race, when we're trying to build the class.

I am surprised other Hobie classes would allow alternate rudders, when they don't allow alternate sails.

zzzzzzzzzzzz And why can everyone else put EPO rudders on 14,16,17,18 20 and 21s? Oh well, who gives a shi#. Boring argument.
Why don't we try to get some friggin' people racing the boats first, THEN talk about what the hell to do to modify them. Pretty much putting the cart before the horse.

I just did it to see if it was mechanically possible. I'm up for challenge, and seize opportunities to sharpen my Mcguyver skills :) Politic away...but I'm out. I'm just the mechanic like Cooter on the 'Dukes of Hazzard'. :lol:

I am thinking of buying a set of EPO 3 rudders with Hobie 18 castings to retrofit my 2012 Wave. Trying to find out if these are IHCA class legal?

Yes. You can do that. Seems like a ton of money to put into the rudders, but it will work out and be Class appropriate.
