I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one to ask this question. With all things being equal, should a wave be faster than a sunfish?

See 3:55 in my video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fUEa7FRpCA
Do you see the Sunfish in the background? Any Questions?

Video is quite impressive, along with some of the others. I saw max speed at 15 mph. Probably that is conservative. Just have to see. The little boat is a crazy fast extreme sailing machine in the really big stuff. This coming summer, we'll be doing some of this kind of speed testing and video to return the favor. The fleet is up for it. Thanks for the great orchestral accompaniment on the video as well.

I have hit a top speed of 16.4 mph, see 2:21 in this video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvqwipo0qUE
I would love to see someone go faster!

Maybe have gone faster, but nothing to prove it. Just a story. The Wave, due to the straight skeg to bow bottom (no rocker) and asymmetrical hull design, plus an almost pitch-pole proof geometry should be able to go over 20, and I believe that I once did so in a 30k+blow, running downwind at Lake Mead a month ago. The windswell sets were maybe 10' apart and the boat simply skipped smoothly over the wave crests at hair raising speed. Having that experience showed that it is worth playing around with seeing just how fast it can go. 'Where man or beast fears to go'

Does flying a hull cause you to slow down due to the wind that you spill?

that seems to be the consensus, but maybe some genius out there can explain it better.

How can you avoid flying a hull if you don't want to?

In 15k breeze or more, close hauled out to a reach, the boat will rise for sure, though if you do not have the mainsheet cleated, you can ease it slightly and the boat settles down. I have removed the cleat from my main sheet block and just hand hold the sheet, except downwind. That is why I found it good advise during a clinic with a world champion racer that 'I cleat the mainsheet if I want to capsize'. Hope that makes sense to you.

1) Ease the sheet.
2) Turn the boat into the wind.
3) Hike harder.
4) Add a second person on board.
5) Reef the sail.
6) Stay on the beach.

The question is why would you not want to fly a hull? That is my addiction!!!

just counter intuitive to racing junkies is all. flying the hull is slow. Notwithstanding, it is a gas.

My impression is that the sweet spot is with the hull just a few inches out of the water. Are you sure this is slower than not flying the hull at all?

While on many of the other Hobie's (fiberglass in particular), the windward hull just kissing the waves has been the norm. Yes, you are correct. The Wave, however, with only 9 square meters of sail takes a lot more wind to get the 80lb windward hull up. So, yes, when in that 15-20mph blow, the boat has begun to realize it's full speed potentials, and I like to keep that hull up a little. In around 10mph wind my windward hull is hard to get up above the leeward hull. Still, racing to weather on a Wave is primarily an exercise in keeping the boat flatter. Most regattas don't get that kind of wind often. It is usually a very tactical dual. Win the start, good helm and trim, going the right way, no blown tacks, good mark roundings, or in other words, no mistakes. I sail the boat recreationally for fun some of the time, but mostly to improve the helm and trimming skills in race conditions. Just really dig one design racing for some reason.

On this video max speed is 14,5 knots. But the wind was about 12-17 knots. Have fun:)
