Have a new '09 that's not been wet yet. Stepped the mast (on the trailer) and raised the mainsail. Sail hoist was fine until half way up the length of the CompTip. Repeated tries.....could not hoist sail completely. With the mast setting on the ground I was able to pull the sail completely to the top of the mast. I understand the sail luff rope is teflon (?) coated to ease hoisting. Ran a set of feeler gauges the entire length of the CompTip sail slot with the same amount of 'drag'. The CompTip luff slot is narrower than the aluminum mast luff slot. Any idea on improving raising the sail luff rope through the CompTip? I've used dry lube on my old '16 mast. thanx, |

I have seen many things used. Dry lube is great and does not attract dirt. Some people use bar soap(washes off if you don't like it), and others use bees wax. Wax tends to hold dirt so I don't use this. The first thing I would do is clean out the luff track. It is amazing what a small amount of dirt will do. I also use a plastic polish (car wax will do) to protect and clean the track. Clean and slippery is what you are looking for. You may also want to check the wheels at the top of the mast. Are they turning under load, or are you burning groves in them with the halyard. If they don't roll under pressure, this may be your issue. If you were able to pull it up by hand, but not with the line, check this too. |

Every once and a while I used to have the situation where the main seems difficult to raise just about where it meets the comp tip. First thing to check is how tight you have the battens, the second is to have the boat pointing directly into the wind. Both these things could force the bolt rope hard against the side of the sail track (if not set properly). If the track on the comp tip is narrower, then it will catch on that edge. Charlie |

Make sure the track lines up with the aluminum section. File a flair in the plastic track if needed. Check the head of the sail to see if the material is coming unstitched. That would catch at the joint. Be sure to feed the sail into the opening as you pull on the halyard. |
