Currently a Bravo owner, buying a used Wave. Year presently unknown but likely pre-2005/pre-EZ-Lock. If I were guessing I'd put it around 2000-2003 based on what I know. The boat is missing all removable rudder parts... the closest thing to a rudder are the pintles. My questions are:

1 - If the boat was originally non-EZ, should I upgrade to EZ, and if so do I need different pintles?
2 - Is there a "group" part number for a full rudder assembly, or do I need a list of individual parts?
3 - Do rudders or parts thereof from other Hobies fit this boat? Particularly an earlier (1980) Hobie 16?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Replace with or Upgrade to EZ Loc. Its less expensive by far and much easier to use.

Thanks for the input, Matt. Still curious about using H16 rudders on Wave, as there's a guy not too far from me parting one out. Wouldn't mind getting her on the water on the cheap, and upgrading later.

As I understand it from part numbers, the EZ Loc rudders use both different pintles and different blades?

The entire H16 rudder system? Not really sure how that would work. The type and placement of the transom hardware are different.

The EZ LOC uses a specific blade with indents for the housing cams.

You should go to the catsailor.com forum for the IWCA (International Wave Class Association). Their rules let you change rudders, and some folks prefer the older style; so you might find someone willing to sell you their EZ-Locks. You might also be able to sell your older style pintles.

The original Wave rudder system is also used on the 17 and newer 18s. You might need to adjust the length of the tiller crossbar.

Thanks much for all the info, folks. I greatly appreciate it. Of course, if anyone has a used set of rudders, either style, they'd be interested in parting with please let me know.

Regards,
Paul
