By the end of next summer i am plannig to have my hobie wave competing against Hobie Dragoon's, 14, and 16's. For christmas im getting the single trapeze and after that we'll get the spinnaker and jib. Then we should be able to beat most dragoons and 14's. But i ask this. Is it possible to get a boom on the wave. They do it for the bravo. Maybe the dragoon one will fit. We have to start asking Hobie to make a boom for the wave. That way it can really compete against the fiberglass series, but still be easy to car top, durable, and easy to set up. |

As a part of upgrading to compete against 14's, did you enlarge the main? Add a traveler? New jib? Larger gennaker? Sailing on Puget Sound has lots of light wind days, so a larger main and real jib would help the boat to power-up with less wind. |

A boom is not needed. A better addition is a rear traveler. Hobie's H-16 traverler works well. The addition of a diagonal batten, from the luff a few feet up from the tack to just above the clew will help to keep the clew down and out. |

You would probably spend less money just buying a used 14 or 16. I dont know if you can make the wave as fast as a 14 or 16. I like the wave the way it is. It is simple and tough and fast to set up and take down. More time on the water and less time with messing around. The more stuff you put on the boat the more work it is to sail. You should check out catamaran sailor magazines' web site. I dont think Rick White is too impressed with the jib or spinnaker on the wave. Thanks have fun |

Im just saying I like the simplicity of the wave. If I wanted to go much faster or compete against faster boats I would buy a faster boat. Rick White could probably out sail most of us in a bathtub with sails. I gather from what is written on the catamaran sailor magazine web site he considers the commercially available Hobie wave spinnaker and jib almost worthless. Thanks |

rbrazz: Yea the jibs and spin from Hobie don't work very good. I tried the sport jib on my 17, it was useless, so I bought at custom 190 sq ft reacher from Sabre that Bob Curry cut for me. I have the traveler kit. Information on ordering it is in another thread. I plan on installing for a trip to the outer banks of North Carolina in april. I have also installed the trapeze though I only hiked out on it on the beach. I can't imagine hiking out while under sail solo, it seems like there is a lot going on... |

It's not a "semi-custom" sail - it is a custom sail. It's essentially a big reaching jib, mounted on a fixed spinnaker pole with a roller furler. |
