Post subject:  Hiking Stick?

Has anyone modified their wave by attaching a hiking stick? I've rented waves over the years (mostly soloing) and thought the addition of a hiking stick would greatly aid in weight distribution when pointing.

It has been talked about here before. If the wind is strong, you'll want to keep your weight toward the stern to keep your bows from diving, so you don't really need one. But if the wind is light, and you want to balance the boat (and get less tail drag), a stick does let you move farther forward as appropriate. It's especially needed with the short tiller arms on the EZ-Loc rudders.

Some folks have bought a proper hiking stick with a "real" joint for the tiller crossbar. I just made mine out of PVC conduit with a flex joint from Lowe's, for about $10.

Yes, I would think a stick would be very helpful in pointing. Even in a heavy wind it is important to keep weight forward when pointing (i.e., you can point much higher with level hulls and pitch pole is not a factor).

I bought the basic Hobie hiking stick for my Wave, and IMHO it's definitely worth it. In light winds it really helps you to get your weight forward, stopping the stern from dragging and improving speed. In heavy winds I find that I can hike out further (and more comfortably) hanging on to the hiking stick instead of the tiller crossbar.

One item to note, if you are drilling the tiller crossbar on the new style (easy lock?) rudder system, you need to mount the tiller extention on the forward diagonal, about fourty five degrees. If you mount it on the top of the tiller crossbar when the rudders are locked down, the tiller will stick up in the air when the rudders are up.

Tiller extensions are now officially class legal:

The IWCA voted in December to follow whatever the IHCA did, so they're legal in both class associations.

I got some Carbon Finer tubing from Rock West composites and epoxied a cork ball on the end. I made it about 5 ft long. Costs about 58.00 bucks and looks cool lol. I haven't tried it yet but I can cut it shorter, it may be to long.

Why does Hobie not come out with a Tiller extension so that we can keep our boat all O/E. I do not want a bastard modification and I'm worried about drilling the tiller crossbar without have a reneforcement to prevent it from kinking in the middle. Hobie Europe has one and Hobie North America will not sell it here.

Hobie has a factory tiller extension kit for the Wave now. You should be able to get it thru your dealer.

In heavy winds I leave my hiking stick hanging off the back of the boat. Something to think about. You have a light boat with a thin tiller crossbar. Choose a light weight hiking stick that will absorb some shock so not to stress your crossbar.
