First time out with new Wave on Sunday with great wind. All went well until end of day when de-masting. While having difficulty removing mast pin, noticed that the mast base was cracked at the side. What could have caused this? Can't imagine it is normal wear and tear (first time boat was used)? |

When de-rigging, the mast must be kept in line with the boat. If it was lowered with the mast rotated sideways, the pressure on the pin could damage the cast aluminum base. Not to worry, it can be replaced with a couple of rivets. Show it to your dealer and the repair should only take a few minutes. Call ahead and make sure that the dealer has the part as it is not a common one to break. By the way, de-masting is when your mast comes down while sailing, usually when a wire fails. De-rigging is when you are taking the boat apart. |

Thanks for the reply. You are correct, it was during de-rigging that I noticed the problem. Is this something that is typically covered under Hobie's warranty? |

This would not be covered by warranty as it is not a failure of the product to perform as designed. The mast must be kept straight when lowering. Allowing it to rotate places a considerable load on the casting. |

The mast was kept straight while lowering, it was suggested as a possibility by another contributor. What else might cause such a problem? Can't think of anything unusual that happened. Have you seen the problem before? |

Not without the mast coming out of position when lowering. I am certainly willing to look at the part for you. If it is defective in some way, we can replace it. If the mast rotated a bit, I would find some marks where the base opening contacted the threaded post. That can cause the mast base to try and pry off the ball and possibly crack it at the pin hole. |

I just did the same thing when I stepped my mast with the sail up. The sail had come out of the luff track at the top after I flipped the boat in 25knots. I must have had the mast turned just enough to pry the step right out I didn't even feel any resistance at all. I should have turned the boat over on the beach to fix the sail. Do you think I'll have to re drill the holes to a larger size they are some what distorted now on the crossbar? Mark |

Larger size? for the pin? The pin diameter would be a problem. Best to replace the base or find a way to use it as is. You really only need to place the base cup on the ball. If you keep forward load on it, it won't come off when stepping. Once up, you don't need the pin. |

Matt No I mean the holes for the pop rivets . I know the pin routine its fine I got a new step from Hobie Cats NW today. |
